Waratah Wynyard Loo With a View Business Case
Waratah Wynyard Council in Northern Tasmania contracted Episteme to complete a business case for a Loo With a View on Circular Head - adjacent to the spectacular tulip fields known for their blooming in October every year and overlooking the vast Bass Strait.
This was a totally enjoyable project where we researched and learned all about the huge economic potential of investing in public toilets for a destination. We found out that clean and cared for toilets are a ‘window into the soul’ of the town. Visitors experiencing these are more likely to feel an affinity for the place, more likely to purchase from the local eateries and potentially seek more to experience. The same research finds that if people have a positive toilet experience, they are more likely to visit the same place the next year, and plan their trip around it.
Responding to the research findings on the importance of toilets in journey planning and decision making, MyTravelResearch.com established the annual International Toilet Tourism Awards in 2017. The organisers of these awards have noted that it is difficult to get people to re-enter after winning because they are so busy dealing with the global press attention and increased visitation they receive.
We found the most incredible case studies: James Bond toilets in Piz Gloria, Switzerland; Hundertwasser toilet in Kawakawa, NZ; Matakana sculptured toilets in Matakana, NZ; Lobster Loos in Wellington, NZ; and the Cliffhanger Loo in Cobourg Peninsula, NT.
As a result of this report and other work done by council, we are pleased to hear that the Waratah Wynyard Council has voted unanimously to support the Loo with a View and authorised officers to seek funding for the project. An awesome result and we hope to help find some funding soon.
